How to Become a Nurse Despite UK Placement Shortages

Many students worry that they won’t be able to enter nursing because university placements are limited. The reality is that there are several valid pathways into nursing, including alternatives that avoid the bottlenecks in the UK system.

1. Standard UK Nursing Degree (with placements).  Most students follow this route and complete:

                          3-year degree

Minimum 2,300 hours of clinical practice

Registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)

Placements are required, but some universities offer flexibility through simulation and community providers.

2. Nursing Associate → Registered Nurse (Shortened Route).  A great option for students who prefer a paid or vocational path.  Route:

2-year Nursing Associate programme (apprenticeship or university)

                          18–24 month top-up Nursing degree

This reduces the number of placements needed for full registration.

3. Train Abroad, Register in the UK.  An increasing number of students study nursing overseas, then return to the UK to register through the NMC international route.  This can be done in:

                        Ireland

                        Cyprus

                        Malta

                        India

                        Philippines

                        Africa (various countries)

                        Caribbean

After completing an overseas nursing qualification, they return to the UK and complete:

English language requirement

CBT test

OSCE exam

This route avoids UK placement shortages entirely.

4. Graduate Entry Nursing (for degree holders)

A 2-year postgraduate accelerated programme for students who already have a degree.
Placements are required, but shorter and more flexible.

5. Private Sector & Simulation Expansion

Universities are increasing simulated practice hours and using private-sector placement partners, which helps relieve NHS pressure.

n summary:

There is no single route into nursing, and UK placement shortages do not close the door.

Students can pursue nursing in the UK, progress via the Nursing Associate pathway, or study overseas and qualify via the international NMC route.
